How to Fix a Stuck Window
Step-by-step fixes for stuck windows, from simple lubrication to hardware replacement.
Find the cause first
A stuck window is usually paint-sealed edges, dirty or dry tracks, or a failed balance or roller. Spray the tracks with a silicone lubricant and gently work the sash before forcing anything.
DIY steps
Clean the tracks, scrape old paint from the sash edges, lubricate with silicone (never oil, which collects dirt), and check the hardware. If it still binds, call a pro.
When to call a professional
Bent frames, broken balances, and windows that jumped their track need realignment and replacement parts โ a quick pro fix that prevents further damage.
